Wood moves. That's not a defect — it's what wood does. Planks absorb moisture from the air, swell a little, then release it and shrink back. In most of the country that cycle is mild. In Florida, where indoor humidity can swing hard between the rainy season and months of air conditioning, that movement is the single biggest thing standing between you and a hardwood floor that still looks right five years from now.

Here's what that means in practice, and what a careful installation does about it.

What humidity actually does to a wood floor

When planks take on moisture, they expand sideways. If the floor was installed with no room to move, boards press against each other and the edges lift — that's cupping. When the AC runs dry for months, planks shrink and thin dark lines open between boards — those are gaps. Neither means the wood is bad. Both usually mean the installation didn't respect the material.

Solid vs. engineered: the honest difference

Solid hardwood is one piece of wood top to bottom. It's beautiful, it can be sanded and refinished for decades, and it moves the most — so in Florida it demands the most discipline: acclimation, expansion space and a stable indoor climate.

Engineered hardwood is a real wood surface bonded over a layered core. The layers pull against each other, so the plank stays flatter when humidity swings. That's why engineered boards are often the calmer choice for Florida rooms, wide planks and installs over concrete slabs — which is what most Florida homes sit on.

The three things that decide how your floor ages

• Acclimation. Wood needs days — not hours — sitting in the room where it will live, reaching balance with that room's real humidity before the first plank goes down. Skipping this step is how brand-new floors cup in their first summer.
• Moisture testing the slab. Concrete holds water long after it looks dry. A proper install measures slab moisture and uses the right barrier instead of guessing.
• Expansion space. A wood floor is installed floating free of the walls, with a gap hidden under the baseboard. That gap is not sloppy work — it's the room the floor needs to breathe.

Does this change anything for herringbone?

Pattern floors like herringbone move the same way straight planks do — but because the pieces sit at angles to each other, sloppy moisture handling shows up faster: the weave opens unevenly and the pattern stops reading crisp. The pattern itself isn't riskier; it just has nowhere to hide a rushed installation.

What you can do as the homeowner

Keep the house in a steady range — roughly 35–55% indoor humidity — and avoid long stretches with the AC off in summer. A wood floor in a stable room barely moves at all. That's the whole secret: stable room, disciplined install, honest material.
